Frequently Asked Questions
Preparing for Your Event

Q: Do you travel to your clients?

A: Yes! I usually travel to my clients' homes. A travel fee will be charged to the client if travel time exceed 30 minutes by car. Any other necessary travel costs such as bus or train fairs will be charged to the client, and will be agreed upon before your appointment.

Q: Where in my home (or venue) is the best place to have my makeup done?

A: I always prefer to do makeup in a brightly lit space with as much natural sunlight as possible. I will also need some kind of surface to set up my equipment. (a table or kitchen counter is perfect).

Q: How long does a full face of makeup usually take?

A: A face of makeup usually takes between 45 minutes and an hour and 15 minutes, though it can take longer if the makeup is particularly intricate. I need at least 5 minutes between faces to clean my brushes and tools. I always arrive about 15 minutes before I need to start the first face to set up my equipment.

Q: Can I bring my own makeup products to my appointment to be used?

A: Absolutely! Though I have everything necessary to complete your makeup, I am open to using any product that you bring with you.

Q: How do I decide what I want my makeup to look like?

A: Choosing a look for an important event can be challenging. As your artist, part of my job is to design a look that will suit your face shape, eye colour, skin tone, outfit and personality, while taking your preferences into account. Here are a few things that you can do to figure out what those preferences are, so we can create a custom look that incorporates your style and my expertise:
-
Browse Pinterest! Creating a Pinterest board is helpful because it lays out your options in front of you, and allows you to see reoccurring patterns that attract your eye, which could be incorporated into your look. I have a Pinterest board with lots of looks that I love for my graduating clients (though they'd be beautiful for any event). You can see it here: https://www.pinterest.ca/amyduttonrocks/client-portfolio-prom/
-
Book a trial run!! Sometimes clients feel differently about a style of makeup once they see it on their own face. If a trial run is booked, we can experiment with styles and colours to create a custom look that you know you will love.
-
Contact Me at any time!! I am passionate about makeup, and I always welcome the opportunity to talk about it. If you'd like advice about colour or style, you can email, call or text me. You can send me a picture of you, or the outfit you'll be wearing to your event and I will send you ideas and pictures of makeup that might interest you. You can ask questions about products and techniques, or talk to me about the looks you are considering. I'd love to hear from you!

Q: Theres a specific product I'd like to be used that I don't own. Can you help me with that?

A: Yes! I often buy products for my clients (by ordering them online or finding them in store) and bring them to their appointment. The cost of the product (plus any shipping and customs fees) is added to the appointment price and the client takes the product home with them when we are finished. As you might imagine, I buy a lot of makeup. This sometimes allows me to get free shipping or discounts on large orders, so my clients often pay less than what they may have paid if they had bought a product themselves.

Q: Do you charge a deposit?

A: I charge a deposit of $100 for contracts of $200 or more. The deposit will be collected either upon making the appointment (via e-transfer) or during the trial run.

Q: Do I need to bring anything with me to my appointment?

A: I have everything necessary to do your makeup, but there are a few things you can bring if you wish:
-
Your favourite skin care products - I always cleanse the skin and apply moisturizer before doing a makeup, so if you have a favourite moisturizer, serum, toner etc. you are welcome to bring it with you for me to use.
-
Your mascara - Makeup artists must use disposable mascara wands to avoid transferring bacteria to a clients eyes, but disposable wands aren't aways the best for adding length and volume. If you bring your own mascara the regular wand can be used which is usually much more effective.
-
Photos of makeup that you like - its always good to have an idea of what kind of look you'd like to achieve.
-
Any other products that you love and would like me to incorporate into your look

Q: How do you take payment?

A: I take cash, check or e-transfer on your appointment date.
